125th Anniversary of

The Great Fire of 1892

Woodland, CA

This year marks the 125th Anniversary of The Great Fire of 1892. This is the fire that changed the face of downtown Woodland and caused the only line of duty death in the Woodland Fire Department.

Many years have elapsed since the destructive conflagration occurred that laid to waste two business blocks and one block of residences in the fair city of Woodland, and many people are familiar with the particulars, that to some it may appear to be stale news to remember an account of the fire at this late date.

There are so many reasons, however, any one of which is sufficient, why at least a condensed account of the probable cause, estimated losses and other particulars and other incidents of the greatest calamity that ever-visited Woodland.

In remembrance of this event that affected us as a city the Woodland Fire Department is planning a “Remembrance Ceremony”. This ceremony will be taking place on July 1st, 2017 from 12pm to 5pm in Heritage Plaza. The event will include antique apparatus, historical demonstrations, tours of the Opera House and much more.

If you would like more information please feel free to contact the Woodland Fire Department at (530) 661-7865.
