Now Hiring: Vocal Director

​The Woodland Opera House Education Department is seeking a passionate Vocal Director to join our creative team for James and the Giant Peach JR. as a part of our 2026–2027 Junior Theatre Festival (JTF) Troupe. Our JTF Troupe is an audition-based educational performance program for students ages 12–17 that includes a full production on our historic stage as well as a 15-minute piece to be performed at the Junior Theatre Festival West in Sacramento. We are looking for someone passionate about mentoring young artists, who values excellent vocal training, and is excited to become part of a creative team we hope will grow with our program for years to come. Our troupe has earned multiple honors at Junior Theatre Festival, including Outstanding Production and Excellence in Dance, and our team is committed to artistic excellence, collaboration, and student growth. Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have:
  • Strong knowledge of healthy vocal technique and adolescent vocal development.
  • Experience teaching expressive singing, vocal dynamics, harmony, blend, diction, and musical storytelling.
  • Experience music directing youth theatre productions.
  • The ability to provide constructive, age-appropriate vocal coaching in both group and individual settings.
  • A collaborative, organized, student-centered approach.
  • Piano proficiency preferred.
Program Commitments
James and the Giant Peach JR.
Rehearsals begin October 11, 2026.
Regular rehearsal schedule:
  • Saturdays: 9:00–11:00 a.m.
  • Sundays: 6:00–9:00 p.m.
  • Mondays: 7:00–9:30 p.m.
  • Thursdays: 7:00–9:30 p.m.

Tech week begins Sunday, December 6th, with Dress Rehearsals scheduled for Monday, December 7th through Wednesday, December 9th from 6:00 to 10:00 pm.

Performances are currently scheduled for: 
  •  ​2 School Matinee s on Thursday, December 10th at 9:30 am and 12:30 pm
  • 4 public performances: Friday, December 11th at 7:00 pm; Saturday, December 12th at both 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm; closing Sunday, December 13th at 2:00 pm. 

Junior Theatre Festival Troupe
Following the December production, rehearsals continue as we prepare our adjudication performance for Junior Theatre Festival West. During this phase, rehearsals continue:
  • Saturdays: 9:00–11:00 a.m.
  • Sundays: 6:00–9:00 p.m.
  • Thursdays: 7:00–9:30 p.m.


Junior Theatre Festival West: February 5–7, 2027
(Downtown Sacramento). Typical festival includes:
  • Friday afternoon until 8 pm
  • ​Saturday 7:30 am until 10 pm 
  • Sunday 8:00 am until 10 pm 
A complete production calendar, including all rehearsal, performance, and festival dates, is available upon request.

Compensation
We provide a small stipend plus registration as a member of the Woodland Opera House creative team for Junior Theatre Festival West. Additional details available upon request.
